So...you want to host a tv talk show?

The idea came to me as I was sitting in a hall listening to a guest speaker's discourse on local media. It was pretty interesting - I confess, there is a lot more going on in our local area than I'd realized.   After the talk, the regular monthly CFUW meeting commenced, followed by refreshments.   I didn't really pay attention to much after the speaker was done and as soon as I could steer Mary and Jacquie towards the door, we left.   It was a very cold, rainy Tuesday night, and we all hurried to my car.   As I clicked "unlock" on my key, I said, "You know what we need to do?  I have a great idea!"   They both stared at me. Mary looked interested. Jacquie, who has know me for almost 20 years looked a little scared.            "Book Club on tv", I finished. "It's brilliant!"

As I was starting my car at the same time, I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure Jacquie rolled her eyes.

"Why would we do that?" Mary asked from the back seat.

I met her eyes in the rear view mirror.

"Because we can", I answered with a grin.

Neither of them took me seriously, but the idea was still percolating in my head days later.   I looked up our local tv station and found an email contact for the programming director.   I wrote an email pitching my idea.   I said I saw it as kind of "The View, but with books and wine!".    I didn't mention to anyone that I had done this.  Two days later I received a response.

I walked into Mary's office at work and stood in her doorway.   "I know you're busy but I just wanted to let you know that I pitched our idea to our local tv station and they loved it. They want to meet".

Mary looked at me with a puzzled expression.  "What idea?" she asked.

"The tv talk show.  I pitched it and they want to meet".

Mary stared at me for what seemed like a full minute.  Then she burst into laughter so loud that it had the Auditors in the meeting room down the hall craning their necks to see what was going on.   One of the things I love most about Mary is her laugh!

Next I emailed Jacquie to tell her the news.  All I got in response to that email was   Oh.  My.  God.

A lot of discussion later, I had a meeting with the Programming Director and the Production Manager at Channel 10.   We went over the ideas we had come up with, discussed logistics and agreed to film a pilot episode in the fall to see how it goes.

So.  We are filming the pilot next Friday.  Our guest will be a local author and historian.  More details on that in the show blog: http://letstalkaboutit-nancyr.blogspot.com/

At this point I flip between very excited and a little nauseous.  Part of the deal was that I had to agree to Produce the show as well, and be responsible for content, so I have no one but myself to blame if it doesn't go well.

Wish us luck!!!   I'll let you know how it goes!
